U.S. Vice President’s Greenland visit sparks political backlash

LOS ANGELES, March 25 – U.S. Vice President JD Vance announced he will visit Greenland this Friday to assess security concerns and meet with U.S. Space Force personnel stationed on the island’s northwest coast.
In a video posted on social media platform X, Vance cited growing threats to Greenland’s territories and waterways, emphasizing their strategic importance to the United States, Canada, and Greenland itself. “Unfortunately, leaders in both America and Denmark ignored Greenland for too long, impacting both its security and that of the wider world,” he said.
Vance’s visit comes as part of a broader U.S. strategy to bolster Arctic security. He will be joined by his wife, Usha Vance, who had already planned a trip to Greenland. Additionally, U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright are set to visit, underscoring Washington’s increasing focus on the region.
White House National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes reaffirmed the U.S. interest in Arctic security, citing Greenland’s geopolitical importance and strategic resources. The U.S. has sought to strengthen its presence in the Arctic amid competition from other global powers.
However, Greenland’s politicians have strongly condemned the high-profile visits, calling them “a demonstration of power.” Many local leaders view the increased U.S. attention as politically charged and fear it may escalate tensions with other Arctic nations.
The visits come amid growing geopolitical maneuvering over the Arctic, where major powers, including Russia and China, have expanded their strategic influence. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been at the center of diplomatic disputes, with calls for greater self-governance and concerns over foreign military interests shaping the political landscape.
