More than 70% of schools in Gaza have been directly impacted by Israeli attacks since October 2023, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). In a statement released on Monday, the agency highlighted that 88% of Gaza’s schools are in urgent need of reconstruction or major repairs. This includes 162 UNRWA schools that once served hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children.
The agency expressed deep concern that the ongoing conflict has left Palestinian children displaced, traumatized, and deprived of education. “Education in Gaza is a casualty of war,” the UNRWA said, emphasizing the widespread damage caused by the Israeli military’s operations.
Since the renewal of hostilities on March 18, 2025, following a broken ceasefire agreement, the violence has escalated. Over 51,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have been killed in the attacks since October 2023.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
