Moscow, Russia has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine to mark Victory Day celebrations commemorating the end of World War II. The pause in hostilities, announced by the Russian Defense Ministry, is set to run from May 8 to May 10.
Officials stated that the ceasefire is intended to honor the historical significance of Victory Day and allow civilians in conflict zones safe passage and humanitarian relief. “In recognition of the sacrifices made during World War II, Russia will observe a temporary suspension of military operations,” a Defense Ministry spokesperson said.
The announcement comes amid ongoing heavy fighting across eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities have responded cautiously, expressing skepticism over Russia’s intentions and warning citizens to remain vigilant. Kyiv officials stated they would monitor compliance closely but did not announce a reciprocal ceasefire.
International reactions have been mixed. Some humanitarian organizations welcomed the move, calling it a potential opportunity to deliver aid to civilians trapped in frontline areas. However, Western governments and analysts questioned Russia’s motives, suggesting the pause could be used to regroup forces.
This ceasefire coincides with a period of heightened symbolic importance in Russia, as Victory Day is one of the country’s most celebrated national holidays, honoring the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, tensions remain high, and both sides have accused each other in recent weeks of escalating attacks on civilian areas. Observers stress that any lasting de-escalation will require more substantial commitments beyond symbolic gestures.
Victory Day commemorations in Moscow will proceed as planned, including the traditional military parade in Red Square, though under tight security measures.
