Montreal – In a powerful show of international unity, world leaders and representatives from over 40 countries gathered at a high-level summit in Montreal and pledged to intensify efforts for the return of Ukrainian children and civilians forcibly taken to Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
The conference concluded with a strong commitment to uphold human rights and international humanitarian law, with participating nations endorsing a joint declaration focused on the safe return of all deported individuals, particularly minors. The agreement outlines coordinated diplomatic efforts, humanitarian corridors, and logistical frameworks aimed at reuniting families separated by war.
Ukrainian officials at the summit revealed that thousands of civilians, including nearly 20,000 children, remain unaccounted for, having been relocated or detained in Russia since the start of hostilities. While some have been returned through third-party mediation, the majority are still awaiting rescue and reunification with their families.
As part of the agreement, countries with neutral diplomatic ties, including several from the Middle East and Africa, have agreed to play key roles in facilitating negotiations and acting as safe transit points. Special attention will be given to safeguarding children during the process, ensuring both legal and emotional support throughout repatriation.
The Montreal Summit marks a renewed international push to resolve the humanitarian crisis facing Ukraine, emphasizing that the rights of children and the dignity of families must remain above political disputes. Delegates underscored the urgent need for continued global cooperation and pressure to secure the safe and swift return of those displaced.
With this collective pledge, participating nations have taken a firm stand for justice, accountability, and the protection of innocent lives in times of conflict.
