The Sarajevo Declaration, issued by the Gaza Tribunal after three days of hearings, condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and urged global civil society to pursue justice for Palestinians. Held at the International University of Sarajevo, the Tribunal—a people’s initiative of academics, legal experts, and activists—focused on war crimes, starvation, and the criminalization of dissent.
Citing over 54,000 Palestinian deaths—mostly women and children—since October 2023, the Tribunal described Gaza’s destruction as systemic and deliberate. The declaration expressed “collective moral outrage at the continuing genocide” and committed to ending the violence and securing accountability.
It condemned the “Israeli regime” for apartheid, mass detention, torture, forced displacement, starvation, and the denial of human rights. The statement rejected Zionism as a state ideology and called for its replacement with a system based on equal rights for all.
Demands included a ceasefire, full military withdrawal from Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, and the resumption of humanitarian aid. It also denounced government and media complicity in enabling Israeli crimes and spreading anti-Palestinian narratives.
The Tribunal reaffirmed Palestine’s right to self-determination as binding under international law. It praised efforts by UN bodies, including UNRWA, and urged urgent international action to protect Palestinian civilians.
Launched in London in 2024, the Gaza Tribunal seeks to address the global failure to uphold international law in Palestine. Its final hearing will be held in Istanbul in October, where a Jury of Conscience will present its findings.
