TEHRAN, July 21: Iran has announced a new round of talks with France, Britain, and Germany (E3) scheduled for Friday in Istanbul, Türkiye, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.
The meeting will focus on the lifting of sanctions and Iran’s nuclear program. Baghaei stated that Tehran will present its demands seriously during the discussions, which will be held at the deputy foreign minister level and attended by the European Union’s deputy foreign policy chief.
Baghaei criticized the three European countries, signatories to the 2015 nuclear agreement, for what he described as inappropriate positions and silence regarding recent Israeli military actions against Iran. He emphasized that the E3 must be held accountable for their stance.
He also rejected the E3’s threats to trigger the snapback mechanism under the nuclear deal, calling such actions illegal, immoral, and without justification. The snapback provision allows for the reimposition of international sanctions if Iran is deemed to have violated the agreement.
This round of talks marks the seventh since September last year when discussions resumed alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The most recent round took place in Istanbul in mid-May.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed in 2015 by Iran and six world powers including the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, Germany, and the United States, was intended to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief. However, after the United States withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions, efforts to revive the agreement have faced significant obstacles.
Iran continues to insist on the complete lifting of sanctions as a prerequisite for compliance, while European countries call for stronger commitments on nuclear restrictions. Talks aim to find a path forward despite ongoing challenges
