ISTANBUL, July 21 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated his government’s full support for Syria’s transitional leadership and firmly rejected any efforts to divide the war-torn country. Speaking to reporters on his return from Northern Cyprus, Erdogan said Türkiye would not leave Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa “alone,” adding that Syria’s recovery is crucial for Türkiye’s long-term stability.
“While unexpected actors are coming together on Syria, Israel continues to sabotage peace efforts,” Erdogan noted. He criticized Israeli interventions in Syria’s Suwayda, which has recently seen tribal clashes and external provocations. Erdogan praised the Syrian leadership’s uncompromising stance and said local communities had achieved important reconciliation.
“Israel seeks to prevent stability in Syria. A unified Syria does not serve its agenda,” he said.
Cyprus and Regional Peace
Marking the 51st anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, Erdogan reaffirmed support for Turkish Cypriots, dismissing recognition of Southern Cyprus. “They do not recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and we do not recognize them,” he said. He reiterated Türkiye’s firm stance on a two-state solution, calling it the only viable resolution.
“Peace has prevailed on the island for five decades, and with Türkiye’s backing, Turkish Cypriots will continue to live freely in their homeland,” Erdogan said.
EU Relations and Defense
On Eurofighter sales to Türkiye, Erdogan noted a positive attitude from the UK and Germany. He called on the European Union to restart Türkiye’s accession process without delay. “The EU needs a dynamic, solution-driven member like Türkiye,” he added.
Gaza Crisis
On Gaza, Erdogan condemned Israel’s actions, saying, “Israel is acting like a crazed monster and will eventually destroy itself.” He emphasized the importance of U.S.-Türkiye coordination and international pressure for a ceasefire, adding, “Everyone agrees on what must be done.”
