SOFIA, July 24 – Bulgarian and Chinese officials, scholars, and public figures gathered in Sofia on Thursday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over fascism in World War II, while reflecting on the importance of safeguarding peace in today’s world.
The event highlighted the need to draw lessons from history, strengthen multilateralism, and support the role of the United Nations in promoting peace and cooperation.
Chinese Ambassador to Bulgaria Dai Qingli emphasized China’s early and determined resistance against fascist forces, its sacrifices during the war, and its contribution to the global victory. She called for closer cooperation between China and Europe to uphold the UN-centered international order and promote inclusive globalization.
Mihail Mikov, former president of the Bulgarian National Assembly, underscored the importance of remembering the roots of the war to prevent future conflicts.
In a video address, Hu Wenli, vice-president of the United Nations Association of China, noted that 2025 marks both the 80th anniversary of WWII’s end and the UN’s founding. She stressed that honoring these milestones requires enhanced multilateral cooperation and a shared vision for global development.
Sofia University professor Alexandar Nikolov echoed this message, emphasizing that the UN continues to play a vital role in conflict resolution and dialogue. He noted that today’s interconnected world makes international solidarity more critical than ever.
The gathering served as a timely reminder of the enduring relevance of unity, historical memory, and global collaboration in preserving peace.
