GAZA, Aug. 12 – A 30-year-old Palestinian man has died from starvation in the besieged Gaza Strip, as Israel released 10 detainees amid reports of torture and deliberate deprivation in detention.
Wissam Abu Mohsen, weighing only 50 kilograms (110 pounds) at the time of his death, had long suffered from health complications caused by severe malnutrition. His condition deteriorated sharply before he was brought to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where he died shortly after arrival, a medical source told Anadolu.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said early Tuesday that deaths linked to hunger since October 2023 have risen to 227, including 103 children, after five more fatalities were recorded in the past 24 hours.
Israel has kept Gaza’s border crossings shut since March 2, blocking nearly all humanitarian aid and pushing the enclave to the brink of famine. Hundreds of aid trucks remain stranded at the borders, while the limited deliveries allowed in are far below the needs of the starving population.
The released detainees, transported by International Committee of the Red Cross vehicles to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, underwent medical checks. Local sources said they were freed through the Kissufim crossing. Upon arrival, they told reporters they had been subjected to torture, starvation, and medical neglect while in Israeli custody.
Rights groups say that Palestinians freed during the ongoing war often suffer severe health damage due to abuse, deliberate deprivation, and lack of medical care.
Israel has killed nearly 61,600 people in Gaza since October 2023. The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes, while Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
