Ankara, Aug. 20 — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation on Wednesday to discuss the outcome of last week’s Alaska summit between the U.S. and Russia, as well as bilateral relations and trade cooperation.
According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, Erdogan underlined that Ankara has consistently pursued a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine since the start of the war. He stressed that peace efforts must include the participation of all stakeholders and reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to support constructive approaches toward ending the conflict.
The statement said Putin acknowledged Türkiye’s role in the peace process, particularly highlighting the Istanbul talks, and expressed gratitude to Erdogan for hosting and facilitating dialogue.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining regular communication and strengthening cooperation between Türkiye and Russia. They also reviewed ongoing trade relations, with Erdogan emphasizing the significance of building on existing economic partnerships to bolster regional stability and prosperity.
The call reflected Ankara’s continued diplomatic engagement with both Western and regional powers, positioning Türkiye as a key mediator in international efforts to de-escalate the Ukraine conflict while advancing its own strategic and economic interests.
