Sanaa, August 24, 2025 — Israeli warplanes launched a major offensive on Sunday, targeting several sites in the Yemeni capital, including the presidential palace and two power plants, according to military sources. The Israeli army said the strikes aimed to destroy Houthi infrastructure in Sanaa, hitting the Asar and Haziz power stations, a fuel storage facility, and a military compound housing the presidential palace.
Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reported that 14 fighter jets participated in the raids, dropping nearly 40 munitions. Fires erupted in southern and western Sanaa as civil defense teams worked to contain the damage.
The Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV confirmed the attacks, noting strikes on a Yemen Petroleum Company facility and the Haziz Central Power Station in Sanhan district. Houthi officials claimed most Israeli aircraft were forced to withdraw after being neutralized. The Israeli Navy previously targeted the Haziz power plant in air raids on August 18.
The Houthi Health Ministry reported two fatalities and 35 injuries from the latest strikes. Israel said the operation was in response to repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks, alleging the group used cluster munitions in a recent strike — the first since 2023.
Since November 2023, Houthi forces have attacked Israeli targets and disrupted commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea, declaring solidarity with Palestinians. Israel’s assault on Gaza has killed over 62,600 people, according to health officials.
