ISTANBUL, Sept. 5 — U.S. President Donald Trump warned of shifting global alliances following the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin were seen in close interaction with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In a Truth Social post Friday, Trump wrote: “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” The message, accompanied by a photo of the three leaders standing together, fueled debate about a possible realignment among major powers at a time of growing tensions with Washington.
Analysts said the SCO summit projected deeper ties among China, Russia, and India, countries that have all faced recent friction with the U.S. The image of Modi and Putin sharing a laugh beside Xi was widely circulated and interpreted as symbolic of emerging cooperation.
Asked about Trump’s remarks, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal declined direct comment but emphasized the resilience of New Delhi’s ties with Washington. “The relationship between the United States and India is very important for us. Both our countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and strong people-to-people ties,” he told reporters in New Delhi.
Jaiswal also noted that the partnership has “weathered several transitions and challenges” and said India remains committed to advancing bilateral cooperation “based on mutual respect and shared interests.”
The U.S.–India relationship has recently been strained by Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports, partly in response to India’s purchase of Russian oil. New Delhi has labeled the tariffs “unfair” but maintains that long-term cooperation with Washington remains a priority.
