RAMALLAH, Sept. 23 – The Palestinian Crossings and Borders Authority announced Tuesday that Israel will indefinitely shut the Allenby Bridge, the only land crossing linking the West Bank with Jordan. The closure, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 24, will halt travel in both directions until further notice.
Nazmi Mohanna, head of the Palestinian crossings authority, confirmed that Israeli officials formally informed them of the decision. “The closure will remain in place indefinitely, affecting all movement of people and goods,” he said in a statement.
The decision comes just one day after the crossing had been reopened, following a four-day suspension prompted by an armed attack in which two Israelis were killed. The assailant, who was driving a humanitarian aid truck from Jordan, was shot dead at the scene by Israeli forces.
While Israel has yet to issue an official explanation, Israeli Army Radio reported that the move could be linked to mounting diplomatic tensions, particularly in the wake of several Western countries’ recognition of the State of Palestine.
Palestinian officials condemned the closure, warning that it will severely restrict freedom of movement for thousands of travelers and disrupt vital trade. They called on international bodies to pressure Israel to reverse the measure immediately.
