JAKARTA, Sept. 23 – Indonesia announced plans to generate more than 6,800 green jobs from the development of nuclear power, positioning the sector as a central pillar of its renewable energy transition.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said at the 2025 Green Energy Summit in South Jakarta that both small modular reactors and larger nuclear plants will play a role in driving job creation. “If we develop nuclear energy at scale, we can estimate that around 6,800 green jobs will be created,” he noted.
To support this ambition, the government is mapping workforce competencies, updating vocational education curricula, and strengthening training institutions to prepare teachers and trainers for new industry requirements. Tanjung emphasized that human capital readiness is key to ensuring Indonesia’s competitiveness in advanced energy sectors.
Beyond nuclear, other renewable sources are projected to offer even greater employment opportunities. The solar industry is expected to employ more than 348,000 workers, while hydropower could create nearly 130,000 jobs, and battery development around 68,000.
The government’s strategy underscores Indonesia’s dual objective: meeting its growing energy demand sustainably while boosting employment through a diversified portfolio of clean energy industries.
