New York, September 28 (AA) — Türkiye reaffirmed its central role in global diplomacy on the Palestinian issue during the 80th UN General Assembly, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressing Ankara’s leadership in efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza and enhanced cooperation with the United States.
Speaking at the Turkish House in New York, Fidan said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was the driving force behind a key meeting that gathered eight OIC and Arab League leaders with U.S. President Donald Trump. “We conveyed, on behalf of nearly 800 million Muslims, that a Gaza ceasefire is urgent, humanitarian aid must flow, and any attempt to displace Palestinians or annex the West Bank is unacceptable,” he stated.
Fidan welcomed the recognition of Palestine by several Western countries, calling it “a concrete outcome” of coordinated OIC-Arab League diplomacy. He underscored that negotiations are underway on a ceasefire framework and future governance of Gaza, with Palestinians themselves at the helm. “Türkiye will continue to defend the just cause of Palestine at every platform,” he said.
Turning to U.S.-Türkiye ties, Fidan described Erdoğan’s meetings in New York and Washington as “extremely productive,” covering Gaza, Syria, NATO cooperation, and the Russo-Ukrainian war. Both leaders agreed to resolve disputes such as CAATSA sanctions, boost defense industry collaboration, and raise bilateral trade to $100 billion. Erdoğan also invited Trump to Ankara for next year’s NATO summit.
On Syria, Fidan emphasized preserving territorial integrity and ending instability that fuels regional threats. He said Türkiye remains ready to contribute political, economic, and security support alongside regional and international partners.
Highlighting that both Erdoğan and Trump share a commitment to advancing relations on the basis of mutual respect, Fidan concluded: “We will continue to use all our creativity and strength to achieve peace, stability, and justice in our region.”
