KYIV, Sept. 28 — Russia unleashed one of its largest combined drone and missile attacks since the war began, striking Kyiv and several other Ukrainian regions early Sunday. At least four people were killed, including a 12-year-old girl, and dozens were injured as residential buildings, a cardiology clinic, and factories sustained damage.
Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down the majority of the incoming weapons, intercepting hundreds of drones and most of the missiles. Despite this, significant damage and civilian casualties were recorded in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Odesa. Nearly 70 people were reported injured nationwide.
In response to the scale of the bombardment, neighboring Poland temporarily closed its southeastern airspace and scrambled jets until the threat had passed.
Ukraine’s leadership condemned the strikes as deliberate terror against civilians and renewed calls for stronger air defense systems, as well as broader international measures to restrict Russia’s access to resources funding the war.
Russian authorities, meanwhile, claimed the strikes were aimed at military targets, though widespread civilian damage highlighted the heavy toll of the assault.
The overnight barrage underscores a sharp escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign, which has intensified in recent months with repeated large-scale attacks against cities across Ukraine.
