GABALA, Azerbaijan — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Turkic states to assume a greater role in ensuring regional peace, stability, and cultural cooperation. Addressing the 12th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Gabala on Tuesday, he emphasized that the Turkic world should take “a more active role” in shaping the security architecture of the region and in responding to regional challenges more effectively.
Criticizing the global governance system, Erdogan said the current structure of the UN Security Council “remains indifferent to many crises that wound the conscience of humanity,” underscoring the urgent need for stronger regional coordination and collective action among Turkic nations to address pressing security and humanitarian issues.
Touching on recent developments in Syria, Erdogan expressed cautious optimism. He said, “Despite challenges, the Syrian government’s progress over the past nine months gives us hope for the future. As Turkic states, we must advance our engagement with Damascus and contribute to sustainable solutions for peace and stability.”
Referring to the South Caucasus, the Turkish leader reaffirmed his country’s commitment to promoting sustainable peace and cooperation in the region. He also denounced Israel’s latest attacks on Qatar, describing them as “a major threat to regional stability and security.”
Erdogan further underlined cultural initiatives aimed at deepening unity, announcing Türkiye’s publication of a new work on Chinghiz Aitmatov and the Oghuznameh using the common Turkic alphabet, which he said represents a significant step toward cultural, linguistic, and educational harmony among Turkic nations.
