CAIRO, Oct. 12– Egypt will host a high-level International Peace Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday, bringing together leaders from over 20 countries to push for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and chart a path toward regional stability.
The summit will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump, with participation from key regional and global powers including Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, France, the UK, Germany, and Pakistan. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and European Council President Antonio Costa are also expected to attend.
According to the Egyptian Presidency, the conference aims to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire, coordinate humanitarian relief for Palestinians, and launch a roadmap for peace and reconstruction. Egyptian officials described the meeting as “a decisive step toward ending the war and preventing further regional escalation.”
The summit comes days after President Trump announced the implementation of the first phase of his 20-point Gaza peace plan, which includes a ceasefire, the release of Israeli captives in exchange for some 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The second phase envisions forming a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas, supported by a multinational peacekeeping force to maintain security and oversee reconstruction.
Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed more than 67,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, leaving Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins. The Sharm el-Sheikh summit seeks to break the cycle of violence and pave the way for a durable peace in the Middle East.
