BUCHAREST, Oct. 23 – The Romanian government has approved the organization of partial local elections, including the vote for Bucharest’s general mayor, to be held on December 7, government spokesperson Ioana Dogioiu announced Thursday at a press conference at the Victoria Palace.
The elections will also cover the presidency of the Buzau County Council and mayoral races in ten other localities where positions have remained vacant since last year. The electoral period will officially begin on November 2, with campaigning scheduled from November 22 to December 6. Polls will open on election day from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time.
Candidates for Bucharest mayor and the Buzau County Council presidency can submit their nominations between November 12 and 17. The government said procedural deadlines have been shortened due to the partial nature of the elections.
Former Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan was elected president of Romania in May, with his deputy, Stelian Bujduveanu of the National Liberal Party, currently serving as interim mayor. The December 7 vote will determine who leads the capital of more than two million residents through the remainder of the current local government term.
