Washington, Oct. 24: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday the immediate termination of all trade negotiations with Canada, citing what he called a “fake” advertisement allegedly designed to influence the U.S. Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on global tariffs.
“Based on their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform.
The controversy centers on an advertisement produced by the Government of Ontario, which the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation accused of “using selective audio and video” excerpts from former President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 radio address on trade. The foundation said Ontario did not have permission to use or edit Reagan’s remarks and warned that it was considering legal action.
Trump claimed the advertisement was intended to interfere with the Supreme Court’s deliberations on the legality of his global tariffs, which the Court is scheduled to hear early next month.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would not grant the United States unfair access to Canadian markets if negotiations collapse, signaling rising tensions between the two countries over trade and political influence.
