Doha, November 2 (QNA) – The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in partnership with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI), will organize an international symposium on Wednesday titled “Human Rights at the Core of Social Development: Towards a Sustainable Future.” The event will take place on the sidelines of the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD), hosted by Doha from November 4 to 6 at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
HE Chairperson of the NHRC, Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, affirmed that social development remains a top national priority for Qatar, pursued through legislation, policies, and diverse initiatives. She pointed out that the country’s Permanent Constitution provides a solid foundation for advancing social progress.
Highlighting the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV2030), Her Excellency noted that its third pillar on social development focuses on three key goals: social care and protection, strengthening community structures, and enhancing international cooperation.
Al Attiyah emphasized that global attention toward social development has continued to grow since the first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, with the United Nations General Assembly adopting numerous resolutions addressing related challenges and obligations.
She explained that the symposium aims to explore ways to integrate human rights into social development policies and programs, ensuring effective participation by national human rights institutions, NGOs, and relevant stakeholders. The event will also promote awareness of the close link between human rights, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
In addition to NHRC and ANNHRI, the symposium will feature collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Family, the Ministry of Labour, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, along with the participation of experts and specialized organizations.
