New York, November 5 – Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced his transition team following his landmark victory, marking a new era in city leadership. Mamdani, 34, becomes New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, and its youngest since the 19th century.
Speaking at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, Mamdani declared that while “the poetry of campaigning has ended, the prose of governing has just begun.” He introduced his transition team led by five women, including Elana Leopold, former aide to ex-Mayor Bill de Blasio; Lina Khan, former chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission; and Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor under Eric Adams.
Mamdani confirmed that Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch will remain in her post, signaling continuity in public safety while addressing past criticism over his earlier remarks about defunding the police.
A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Mamdani pledged to make New York more affordable, advocating higher taxes on the wealthy, rent freezes on stabilized units, and lower childcare costs. He reaffirmed that his administration’s first priority would be tackling the city’s cost-of-living crisis.
While his progressive platform has drawn skepticism from moderates, Mamdani said his victory proves that “politics can once again offer more than crumbs to families struggling to make ends meet.” He also expressed readiness to defend the city from potential federal challenges, saying he would “confront President Trump in court if necessary.”
Mamdani praised select initiatives of outgoing Mayor Adams, such as the city’s trash containerization plan and the “City of Yes” housing reform, promising to build on them. Reaching out to Jewish New Yorkers, he said he aimed to work closely with religious and community leaders “to protect and celebrate” Jewish communities.
Analysts view Mamdani’s victory as a generational and cultural shift, reflecting a growing appetite for progressive leadership in America’s largest city.
