DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 13 – Tanzania’s parliament on Thursday unanimously approved Mwigulu Nchemba as the country’s new prime minister, following his nomination by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Speaker of Parliament Mussa Azzan Zungu announced the results in Dodoma, the capital, to applause from lawmakers. Of the 371 members present, 369 voted in favor, while two ballots were invalid.
Nchemba, 50, an economist and experienced politician from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, previously served as minister of finance. He succeeds Kassim Majaliwa, who held the prime minister post for a decade. Nchemba represents the Iramba West constituency and becomes Tanzania’s 12th prime minister since independence in 1961.
In his acceptance speech, Nchemba pledged to focus on citizens’ welfare and work diligently toward national development goals. Later in the day, he was officially sworn in by President Hassan at the Chamwino State House on Dodoma’s outskirts.
Observers note that Nchemba’s appointment signals continuity in Tanzania’s political leadership, while also highlighting the government’s emphasis on economic expertise in key executive roles.
