WASHINGTON — Two members of the West Virginia National Guard remain in critical condition after being ambushed during a routine patrol near a busy transit station in downtown Washington, D.C., early Wednesday. The attack triggered an immediate response from both federal and local law enforcement.
Jeff Carroll, Executive Assistant Chief of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, said the assailant appeared to act alone. “This was a lone gunman who raised his firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard,” he told reporters.
Investigators revealed that the suspect initially had four rounds in his handgun. The first victim, a female National Guard member, was shot twice and collapsed instantly. The attacker then seized her service weapon and used it to continue firing, critically injuring a second Guard member. A third Guard member, who was unharmed, returned fire and stopped the assault.
The suspect was subdued at the scene and taken into custody by National Guard personnel and police officers. Law enforcement sources confirmed he is currently not cooperating with investigators.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that both wounded soldiers remain in critical condition and are being treated at separate hospitals.
Separately, officials noted that more than 8,000 Afghans had previously received temporary protected status under a program extended in 2023, which was later ended earlier this year. Authorities clarified that this policy matter is unrelated to the attack.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting. Further updates will follow.
