UN Chief Says COSP11 Essential for Battling Corruption in Rapidly Changing World

Doha, December 15 (QNA) – HE UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that corruption is evolving alongside rapid global change, saying the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (COSP11) is helping to “shape the integrity of tomorrow”.
In a recorded video address to the opening session of the conference in Doha, HE Guterres said corruption was far from a victimless crime, arguing that it fuels conflict, entrenches inequality and drains resources needed to protect both people and the planet.
He thanked Qatar for hosting what he described as a vital global gathering, stressing the need to mobilise collective efforts to prevent and combat corruption.
The UN chief cautioned that economic crimes siphon off funds essential for development.
Guterres also warned that emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, could accelerate corruption if left unchecked, while noting that the same technologies could also be powerful tools to detect and prevent it — provided they are subject to proper regulation and accountability.
Calling for closer cooperation between governments, the private sector and civil society, he said the UN Convention against Corruption offers a clear framework for joint action. He added that the convention’s review mechanism has already helped countries identify gaps and advance reforms, stressing that agreement on its next phase is essential to sustain progress.
HE Guterres concluded by warning that prioritising greed over need harms everyone, urging renewed determination to combat impunity, restore trust and build a future rooted in integrity
