ANTANANARIVO — Madagascar on Thursday marked the 50th anniversary of China sending its first medical team to the country, celebrating five decades of health cooperation between the two nations. The ceremony was held in the southern city of Ambovombe.
In his address, Madagascar President Michael Randrianirina expressed deep gratitude to Chinese medical teams for their long-standing assistance to the Malagasy people. He highlighted that since 1975, Chinese teams have worked closely with local health professionals, contributing significantly to the development of Madagascar’s healthcare sector. He reaffirmed Madagascar’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation with China.
Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar, Ji Ping, noted that over the past fifty years, more than 700 Chinese medical personnel have served in Madagascar, providing medical care, sharing expertise, and fostering friendship between the two countries. He added that China will continue to promote bilateral communication and advance health projects to deepen practical cooperation.
Li Xingxiang, head of the 24th Chinese medical team, said Chinese medical workers, far from home, have consistently supported the health of Malagasy communities, building a lasting bridge of health and friendship.
During the event, the Chinese Embassy donated livelihood supplies to local residents and awarded scholarships to 100 students. Over the past fifty years, China has sent 24 medical teams to Madagascar, delivering medical services covering nearly five million patient visits, underlining the enduring partnership and commitment to the wellbeing of the Malagasy people.
