Denmark has decided to summon the United States ambassador in Copenhagen following Washington’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland, a move that has raised diplomatic concerns. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed he will meet U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Howery to seek clarification and convey Denmark’s objections.
The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland. The decision triggered strong reactions in Denmark, especially after comments suggesting Greenland could become part of the United States.
Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV 2, Rasmussen said he was deeply troubled by statements made after the appointment and stressed that any suggestion of changing Greenland’s status is completely unacceptable. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its status is not open for negotiation.
In a written statement to broadcaster DR, Rasmussen acknowledged that the appointment reflects continued U.S. interest in the Arctic region. However, he emphasized that all countries, including the United States, must respect Denmark’s territorial integrity.
The controversy grew after Landry posted on social media platform X, thanking President Trump and linking his role to making Greenland part of the United States, remarks Danish officials consider inappropriate.
