Berlin:
Germany has recorded its highest number of violent attacks against police officers, with official figures showing a continued rise in incidents targeting law enforcement personnel across the country. Data released by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reveal that 46,367 violent acts against police were registered in 2024, marking a new national record.
Authorities reported that the majority of cases involved active resistance or direct physical assault, while other incidents included threats, coercion, and intentional bodily harm. In total, 106,875 police officers were affected by violent acts last year, reflecting a sharp increase compared to figures recorded nearly a decade ago.
According to the data, most identified suspects were male, and a significant portion did not hold German citizenship. Officials noted that the trend highlights growing challenges faced by police forces in maintaining public order and ensuring their own safety during routine operations.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described violence against police and emergency responders as an increasingly common operational reality. He confirmed that the government, in coordination with the Justice Ministry, is preparing new legislative measures aimed at strengthening legal protections for police officers and emergency workers. These measures are expected to include tougher penalties, faster court procedures, and enhanced safeguards for personnel on duty.
Germany last revised laws protecting police and emergency services in 2017, introducing prison sentences of up to five years for physical attacks. Despite these measures, violent incidents have continued to rise, prompting renewed calls for legal and institutional reforms. Further details of the proposed legislation are expected in the coming weeks.
