The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting in New York to address Israel’s recent decision to recognise Somaliland as a sovereign state, a move that has triggered widespread international concern.
Somaliland, a self declared region that separated from Somalia in the early 1990s, remains an integral part of Somalia under international law, according to the majority of council members. They warned that unilateral recognition undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and the principles of the UN Charter.
During the session, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Guyana, known as the A3+, along with Pakistan, strongly condemned Israel’s move. In a joint statement, they declared that Somaliland lacks the legal capacity to enter recognition agreements and urged all UN member states to reject actions that set dangerous precedents.
The group also rejected any attempt to link the issue to proposals involving the relocation of Palestinians, stressing that neither Somalia’s territorial integrity nor the rights of the Palestinian people can be treated as bargaining tools.
Somalia’s representative to the United Nations said the decision violates the UN Charter and African Union principles and threatens regional stability.
China reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning against external interference and the encouragement of separatism.
While most council members voiced opposition, the United States said Israel has the right to manage its diplomatic relations, adding that Washington has not changed its policy and does not recognise Somaliland.
