His Excellency Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, held the Third Qatar–Japan Strategic Dialogue in Doha. The meeting lasted nearly 100 minutes, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussing issues of mutual regional and international interest.
At the start of the talks, Minister Motegi expressed appreciation for the resumption of the Strategic Dialogue, originally launched through a joint initiative in 2021, and commended the steady growth of relations between the two countries. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman welcomed his Japanese counterpart and reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to consolidating and expanding the strategic partnership. The ministers also exchanged best wishes for the success of their national teams in this year’s FIFA World Cup.
The discussion highlighted progress across multiple areas under the strategic partnership, including energy, economy, defense exchanges, cooperation in third countries, and cultural and academic relations. In the energy sector, both sides emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG). Minister Motegi praised Qatar’s key role in ensuring stable energy supplies to Japan, while Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s long-term commitment to energy security. Japan also acknowledged Qatar’s sustained investments in its market.
In defense and security, the ministers noted tangible achievements, including the launch of bilateral defense consultations in 2023, the visit of a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel to Qatari ports in 2024, and the historic visit of Japan’s Chief of the Joint Staff to Doha.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in third countries through coordinated development and humanitarian initiatives and welcomed growing academic and people-to-people exchanges, highlighting Qatar’s early confirmation to participate in Green Expo 2027 in Yokohama.
The ministers also exchanged views on regional and international developments, including Gaza, Iran, the Korean Peninsula, and East Asia, and agreed to maintain close coordination on these issues.
