Ankara, Türkiye has reiterated its firm opposition to any military intervention against Iran, emphasizing that Tehran should resolve its internal challenges through diplomacy and dialogue. Speaking to journalists in Istanbul, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara does not want to see external interference in Iran, stressing that economic difficulties should not be misinterpreted as ideological opposition to the regime.
Fidan noted that sanctions and restrictive policies have significantly affected Iran’s economy, creating social pressures within a large and dynamic society. He said such hardships can sometimes appear as political or ideological unrest, but in reality fall into a “grey area” driven largely by economic constraints. Türkiye, he added, closely follows developments in Iran, as stability in the country directly concerns Ankara and the wider region.
Referring to international dynamics, Fidan said Türkiye has not observed a strong inclination toward ground military intervention in recent statements by the US administration. He urged Iran to resolve its disputes with certain global actors and to pursue diplomatic solutions on nuclear-related issues in order to ease structural economic problems. Türkiye, he stressed, will continue its diplomatic engagement and monitoring of developments related to Iran.
Turning to regional security, Fidan said the YPG/SDF terrorist group continues to pose a threat both to Türkiye and to regional stability. He underlined that Türkiye has no issue with Kurdish people in Syria, but firmly opposes terrorist organizations operating under different names across several countries. Fidan called for the implementation of the March 10 agreement, noting that Ankara has repeatedly highlighted the illegality of the group’s presence in certain areas, including Tel Rifaat and Ayn al-Arab.
Addressing Syria’s future, Fidan emphasized the importance of representing all minorities within a unified constitutional framework, warning that creating political enclaves would risk fragmenting the country. He said coexistence under a single flag, while preserving cultural identity, remains the most viable path.
On global issues, Fidan stated that if a peace agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine, Turkish naval forces would assume a leading role in the Black Sea’s maritime security. He added that Türkiye will continue its active diplomatic and security efforts into 2026 amid growing concerns over European security.
