Doha, January 28, 2026: Syrian Army forces have uncovered a vast underground tunnel network in the town of Sarrin, northeastern Syria, previously controlled by the YPG terrorist group, Anadolu Agency reported. The tunnels, spanning three interconnected levels beneath a mountain, contained large quantities of ammunition, organizational documents, and military equipment.
The complex was designed with strategic sophistication, featuring wide passages capable of accommodating vehicles, reinforced sections with armored doors, and essential utilities such as electricity and water lines. The network also included multiple kitchens, sleeping quarters, a cinema hall, an amphitheater, and even a bakery, reflecting its role as a fully functional underground base. Tools used for excavation were also discovered inside the tunnels.
Brig. Gen. Sayf Bulad, commander of the Syrian Army’s 76th Division, described the structure as “one of the terrorist organization’s command centers.” He highlighted its strategic importance, noting that Syrian forces secured the site and cleared all mines planted by the group.
Bulad also revealed that publications found within the tunnels were used by the terrorist organization to indoctrinate Kurdish children and manipulate youth across ethnic communities, including Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, and Turkmens, in an effort to destabilize Syria’s social fabric.
“The organization’s attempts to establish a state in northeastern Syria have been dismantled, thanks to the heroic efforts of the Syrian Defense Ministry,” Bulad stated.
Authorities have expressed plans to convert the site into a museum, preserving it as a reminder of the organization’s activities and educating future generations about the impact of terrorism in the region.
