Mirpur (AJK) – February 10, 2026 – Plans are in place to commemorate the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of veteran Kashmiri freedom leader Muhammad Maqbool Butt on Wednesday, February 11, across both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), including Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), and in Kashmiri diaspora communities worldwide. The observances will reaffirm the enduring pledge to continue the mission of the departed leader until the people of Jammu & Kashmir achieve their legitimate right to self-determination.
Rallies, processions, seminars, and public demonstrations will be organized in major towns and cities across both sides of the LoC to honor Shaheed Maqbool Butt, who was executed in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 11, 1984, for advocating the liberation of Kashmir from Indian occupation. His sacrifice is remembered as a symbol of courage and unwavering dedication to the Kashmiri struggle for freedom under the principles of international law.
Speaking to media, Advocate Azeem Dutt, former President of the Jammu & Kashmir Plebiscite Front, highlighted that the day will feature complete strikes in multiple areas, accompanied by rallies, conferences, and educational seminars to educate and mobilize communities around the cause of Kashmir’s self-determination.
Memorandums detailing the long-standing Kashmiri demand for an early resolution of the Kashmir issue under UN resolutions will be submitted to UN observer missions in both occupied and free Kashmir. The programs also aim to engage students, youth organizations, and civil society to strengthen awareness of Kashmir’s historical struggle and Shaheed Butt’s enduring legacy.
In AJK, major commemorative events will take place in Muzaffarabad under the auspices of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), National Students Front, and Jammu Kashmir Plebiscite Front. Rallies will also be held in Bagh, Kotli, Khuiratta, Dadayal, and other districts. In urban centers such as Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Sialkot, community members will join in solidarity to honor Shaheed Butt’s legacy.
In Mirpur, civil society groups, including JKLF, Plebiscite Front, National Students Federation, and other organizations, will organize processions and rallies through the city streets, culminating at Shaheed Chowk at 11:00 a.m., where speakers will pay tributes to Maqbool Butt’s heroic struggle and ultimate sacrifice.
In IIOJK, a complete strike has been called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, JKLF, Jammu Kashmir National Front, and other freedom-oriented Kashmiri groups. Observances in Srinagar and other towns will include rallies and demonstrations to mark the martyrdom anniversary and renew commitment to the liberation struggle.
The events across Kashmir and the diaspora highlight the enduring spirit of Shaheed Muhammad Maqbool Butt, the unity of the Kashmiri people, and their ongoing resolve to pursue their right to self-determination until the liberation of their motherland is fully achieved. These commemorations serve both as a tribute and a reminder to the international community of Kashmiris’ persistent struggle for justice.
