MUNICH, Feb. 13 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the world is entering a “new era” in geopolitics as he arrived in Germany to address the Munich Security Conference.
Rubio is leading the American delegation at the high-level gathering, attended by around 50 world leaders. His remarks come amid renewed transatlantic tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial statements regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio said the global order is rapidly evolving and requires nations to reassess their roles and partnerships. European leaders have responded with mixed messages. French President Emmanuel Macron urged Europe to strengthen strategic independence, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the continued importance of transatlantic unity.
The conference agenda includes the war in Ukraine, tensions between the U.S. and China, NATO’s future, and Iran’s nuclear program. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for rebuilding trust between Europe and Washington, revealing ongoing confidential discussions with France on a potential joint European nuclear deterrent.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the gathering could produce new steps toward shared European security. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue, with Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. planning further talks in Geneva later this month.
Rubio is expected to outline Washington’s strategic vision as global alliances face mounting pressure and uncertainty.
