Indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States paused Thursday during their third round in Geneva, with delegations expected to reconvene later the same day at the Omani Embassy.
Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Al-Busaidi, who is mediating the process, said the session was adjourned for consultations after both sides exchanged “creative and positive ideas.” He voiced optimism that additional progress could be achieved once talks resume later Thursday.
The meeting began at 10:00 a.m. local time and continued for about three and a half hours before delegations departed the venue to consult their respective capitals. Iranian media described the discussions as constructive despite recent contradictory public positions attributed to Washington. Officials indicated both sides would return after internal reviews, making this the longest round since negotiations restarted last month.
As in earlier rounds in Muscat and Geneva, Iran’s delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, accompanied by senior political, nuclear, legal and economic advisers. The U.S. side was headed by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, joined by senior representatives involved in the revived diplomatic track.
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, attended as a technical observer, holding consultations with both delegations and the Omani mediator. The Omani Foreign Ministry said the parties demonstrated “unprecedented openness” to new ideas aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable framework for a potential nuclear agreement.
