BEIJING, March 9: China will accelerate the digital and green transformation of its transport sector during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030), Minister of Transport Liu Wei announced on Monday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the annual session of the national legislature, Liu said the government plans to expand the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, across the transportation system. Efforts will focus on developing smart highways, intelligent ports, and modernized shipping networks to improve efficiency and connectivity.
China will also promote the construction of zero-carbon transport corridors and stations as part of its broader strategy to support low-carbon development. Authorities aim to expand the use of clean-energy transportation equipment, including new-energy vehicles and environmentally friendly vessels.
Liu noted that charging facilities at expressway service areas already cover 98.8 percent of the national network. In the coming year, the government will increase the number and capacity of high-power charging stations to reduce waiting times and make it easier for drivers to access charging services.
During the 2026–2030 plan period, China will also introduce initiatives to improve commuting efficiency in major metropolitan regions. The goal is to significantly increase the proportion of residents able to complete intercity travel within one hour, helping strengthen urban mobility and regional integration.
Highlighting the sector’s importance to daily life and economic activity, Liu said China’s logistics system handles an average of about 550 million parcels each day, equivalent to roughly three packages per person every week.
