CAIRO, March 17: Egypt on Tuesday called for an immediate and comprehensive halt to Israeli military operations against Lebanon, including ground incursions and airstrikes, warning that the escalation threatens regional stability and worsens the humanitarian situation.
In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon, describing it as a blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and a serious breach of international law and the United Nations Charter.
The ministry said the continuing Israeli actions are intensifying the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, increasing civilian suffering and pushing hundreds of thousands of people toward forced displacement.
Cairo called for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territories and urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take urgent steps to pressure Israel to halt the escalation and respect international law.
The Israeli military on Monday announced the start of what it described as limited and targeted ground operations against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. The operations followed a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Beirut, its southern suburbs, and areas in southern and eastern Lebanon.
The escalation follows rocket attacks launched by Hezbollah toward Israel earlier this month amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks since early March have killed at least 886 people across the country, highlighting the growing human toll of the conflict.
Egypt reiterated its call for restraint and emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives in the region.
