China has called on the international community to promote peace talks and return to diplomatic solutions to resolve rising tensions in the Middle East, following a recent regional visit by China’s special envoy on Middle East affairs.
Zhai Jun said China had presented its position to regional countries during his visit, stressing that the ongoing conflict should not have happened and has undermined previous diplomatic efforts in the region.
He said China believes the root causes of the crisis must be fully understood and emphasized that any solution should be based on international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He also stressed the need to prevent further escalation, warning that the conflict is threatening regional stability, global economic security, energy supplies, and international shipping routes.
China also emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and avoiding attacks on non-military targets, including energy and economic facilities, as well as ensuring the security of key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The Chinese envoy said the immediate priority should be a ceasefire to prevent further escalation, adding that dialogue and negotiation remain the only effective solution to disputes, while military action cannot resolve fundamental issues.
China also called for opposition to unilateral actions and stressed that the United Nations should play a central role in mediation and efforts to restart negotiations among the relevant parties.
