Iran has stated that vessels belonging to non-hostile countries are entitled to safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, provided they coordinate with Iranian authorities and comply with declared safety and security regulations.
According to a document circulated by the International Maritime Organization among its member states at Iran’s request, ships from countries that do not participate in or support acts of aggression against Iran may benefit from safe passage under specific conditions. The document emphasized that vessels, equipment, and assets belonging to the United States and Israel, or those involved in hostile actions, would not qualify for innocent or non-hostile passage.
Iran stressed that any maritime security arrangements in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman must respect Iran’s rights and be coordinated with its authorities. It also noted that restoring full security and stability in the strategic waterway depends on the cessation of military aggression and destabilizing actions in the region.
The statement further noted that ongoing tensions have created a challenging environment for maritime navigation, increasing risks for commercial shipping and energy transportation. Iran reiterated that ensuring the safety of international shipping lanes remains a priority while also safeguarding its national interests.
The statement added that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and maritime traffic continues, although navigation is subject to precautionary measures introduced to reduce risks to vessels and seafarers amid ongoing regional tensions.
