Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized NATO, accusing the alliance of failing to support Washington in addressing tensions related to Iran. Speaking on Thursday, Trump said NATO has done “absolutely nothing” in response to what he described as growing security concerns involving Iran.
In remarks shared on his social media platform, Trump emphasized that the United States does not rely on NATO for its security needs. However, he called this a “very important point in time,” urging allies to recognize the seriousness of current developments.
The comments come amid heightened tensions in the region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. Recent disruptions have raised concerns about energy security and fluctuations in international oil markets. Trump has called on allies and global powers, including China, to help ensure stability in the strategic waterway.
Several European nations reportedly declined involvement, maintaining that the situation stems from unilateral decisions taken without broader consultation among allies, highlighting divisions within the transatlantic alliance.
During a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction, stating that the United States is “very disappointed” with NATO’s stance. While he said there are no immediate plans to withdraw from the alliance, he indicated the option remains under consideration.
Trump has previously voiced skepticism about NATO, questioning its effectiveness and long-term value, a position he has maintained since his first term in office.
