MIRPUR (AJK): The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission held its first high-level consultative meeting on preparations for the 2026 general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, was attended by heads of political parties and members of the Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly, including representatives of Pakistan-based Jammu and Kashmir refugees.
Justice Mughal emphasized the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, fair, and orderly elections, confirming that the election schedule will be announced in May 2026. He assured that the elections will be held on time and under the supervision of the Pakistan Army to ensure security and public confidence in the process.
Discussions covered timely preparation of voter lists, facility arrangements at polling stations, accessibility measures, and special arrangements for refugee voters. Member AJK Election Commission Syed Nazir Hussain Gilani highlighted the linking of the Election Commission with NADRA’s citizen database and the full digitalization of the electoral system, aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency.
Representatives of political parties submitted proposals on voters’ lists, security measures, and election monitoring. Both the Election Commission and political parties agreed to continue consultations and regular updates to ensure smooth preparations and maximum voter participation ahead of the upcoming elections.
