Xi Jinping has urged all sectors of Chinese society to actively engage in afforestation, stressing that a healthy ecological environment is a shared responsibility requiring collective action.
Xi made the remarks while participating in a voluntary tree-planting activity in Changping District, Beijing, alongside other Party and state leaders including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, and Li Xi. During the event, Xi planted saplings and spoke with children and officials, emphasizing the importance of fostering a love for learning, labor, and nature from an early age.
He highlighted China’s sustained growth in forest area and stock volume, alongside reductions in desertified and sandy lands, noting that the country leads the world in greening efforts. Xi praised the newly adopted Ecological and Environmental Code, reinforcing the legal foundation for building a “Beautiful China.”
Afforestation remains a priority in the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) and marks the 45th anniversary of the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign. Xi called for improved greening quality, development of related industries, greater public benefits, and coordinated urban-rural ecological initiatives to ensure environmental and societal gains.
