European Council President Antonio Costa has called for urgent de-escalation and renewed diplomacy in a phone conversation with Masoud Pezeshkian, as tensions in the Middle East continue to intensify.
Describing the situation as “extremely dangerous,” Costa stressed the importance of restraint, full respect for international law, and the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure. He expressed deep concern over the reported strike on a school in Minab, southern Iran, which resulted in heavy civilian casualties, calling the loss of innocent lives deeply regrettable.
Costa also urged Iran to actively engage through diplomatic channels, particularly with the United Nations, to safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz—a key artery for nearly 20 percent of global oil supplies.
The European Union reiterated its readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and achieving a sustainable resolution to the conflict. However, no official response has yet been issued by Tehran regarding the call.
The crisis, now in its fifth week following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, has led to heightened regional instability. Iran’s restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global energy flows, pushing oil prices above $100 per barrel and contributing to rising inflation across Europe.
