US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s new leadership had approached the United States seeking a ceasefire amid ongoing military escalation and regional tensions. He stated that Washington would consider such a request only if the strategic Strait of Hormuz is reopened and remains secure for international navigation.
In a statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said Iran’s new leadership was “less radical and more intelligent” than previous governments and had expressed interest in halting the conflict. However, he warned that US military operations would continue unless shipping through the Strait of Hormuz becomes “open, free, and clear.”
There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian officials regarding the reported ceasefire request. Trump also said in recent media interviews that the conflict was nearing its end and claimed that Washington had already achieved major strategic objectives. He further noted that US officials were in contact with Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route, with around 20 million barrels of oil passing through it daily. Ongoing disruptions since early March have pushed global oil prices higher and raised concerns about long-term economic and energy security impacts. Meanwhile, continued military exchanges in the region have resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage, increasing fears of wider regional instability.
