Britain announced it will host an international summit this week aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference in London, Starmer confirmed that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will host the meeting, which will bring together international leaders to address the growing economic and security impact of the conflict in the Middle East.
Starmer emphasized that Britain will not be drawn directly into the conflict, highlighting that de-escalation and reopening of the Strait are the best ways to mitigate rising living costs and stabilize global energy markets. “To that end, we are exploring every diplomatic avenue available to us,” he said.
He warned that economic pressures will persist as long as the conflict continues and the strait remains closed, affecting oil and fuel flows worldwide.
The announcement follows comments by US President Donald Trump, who said he is not ready to withdraw US military support from efforts to reopen the Strait but urged allies to take a greater role in securing the critical shipping route.
The summit aims to strengthen international coordination, reinforce maritime security, and ensure uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy supplies.
