A former officer of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces has warned that the country is gradually moving away from its long-standing defense-only policy toward a more combat-ready military structure, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Makoto Konishi made the remarks during a lecture in Tokyo, highlighting recent changes in Japan’s defense policy, military deployments, and rising defense spending. He noted that Japan has expanded its military presence in the southwestern islands despite public concerns and opposition.

Konishi said ongoing revisions to Japan’s national security documents and defense policies reflect a broader shift beyond defensive capabilities toward a “war-ready system.” He warned that these developments could heighten public anxiety and escalate regional tensions.

He also criticized the government for emphasizing external security threats to justify military expansion, noting that Japan’s policies appear closely aligned with United States strategic objectives in the region.

According to Kyodo News, Japan plans to revise guidelines related to defense equipment and technology transfers, potentially further relaxing restrictions on arms exports.
