Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday proposed a major institutional reform to ban government ministers from simultaneously serving as members of parliament, a move aimed at enhancing transparency and modernizing state governance.
Under the proposal, expected to take effect after the 2027 general elections, any lawmaker appointed to the cabinet would be required to temporarily relinquish their parliamentary seat. The vacancy would be filled by the next eligible candidate on the party’s electoral list for the duration of the minister’s tenure.
The proposal comes amid an ongoing investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into the alleged misuse of European Union agricultural subsidies, with several former ministers reportedly named in case files submitted to Greek authorities.
The Greek parliament is expected to begin procedures to lift the immunity of several lawmakers linked to the investigation. Mitsotakis said the reform is part of broader efforts to modernize the state, strengthen institutional transparency, and address long-standing governance weaknesses.
The current government’s term in Greece is scheduled to run until June 2027.
