MOSCOW — Russia has launched a pilot program using biometric verification for passengers on its rail network, local media reported on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko introduced the new Migom service at the 6th annual International Data Fusion Conference in Moscow, which runs from April 8–9, according to RIA Novosti.
The service is currently available on high-speed rail routes operated by Russian Railways, connecting Moscow with Kostroma, Ivanovo, and Nizhny Novgorod. Grigorenko noted that if the pilot proves successful, the program will expand to additional routes.
Passengers must first register their biometric data via an authorized bank or on-site verification and provide consent for personal data processing. During the pilot, travelers still need a valid ID matching their ticket but can use biometric verification as an alternative to presenting a physical passport.
The initiative aims to streamline boarding and strengthen security across Russia’s rail system.
