SHENZHEN, April 8 — A China-developed 1,000-megawatt solar power project has officially entered operation in Laos, marking a major milestone in regional clean energy cooperation, according to China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC).
Located in Oudomxay province, the large-scale photovoltaic facility is expected to generate approximately 1.65 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. The project will significantly contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 1.3 million tonnes each year.
Built in a mountainous region, the project also delivered substantial socio-economic benefits. It created nearly 3,000 local jobs at the peak of construction and supported infrastructure development, including road repairs and reinforcement of five key bridges in surrounding communities.
The initiative reflects strong industrial collaboration between China and Laos, involving more than 70 companies, including over 30 Laotian firms engaged in construction, equipment supply, and raw materials.
In addition to energy production, CGNPC supported the establishment of a clean energy standards research institute in Laos and trained nearly 100 local engineers, enhancing technical capacity in the sector.
CGNPC Chairman Yang Changli said the company aims to expand renewable energy projects in Laos, strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting a shared vision of sustainable development through green energy.
