BERLIN, April 9 — Germany’s opposition parties have called on the government to summon Israel’s ambassador in response to Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon that reportedly killed at least 254 people in a single day.
Left Party lawmaker Nicole Gohlke criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government for silence, urging Berlin to take a clear stance. She called for formally protesting to Israel, pushing for suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and ending all military cooperation.
Green Party lawmaker Omid Nouripour also voiced concern, warning that Lebanon is reaching a dangerous turning point. He stressed the need for stronger European engagement to prevent further escalation and regional instability.
Nouripour said Europe must urgently coordinate efforts to stabilize Lebanon and assess whether ongoing military actions contribute to security. He emphasized that unchecked escalation could have serious consequences beyond the Middle East, including for Europe.
The calls come after one of the largest Israeli strikes in Lebanon in recent weeks, which also left over 1,100 people injured, raising fears of a broader conflict.
